Interlux VC® Offshore is a hard vinyl antifouling bottom paint engineered for performance-focused sailors and powerboat owners who want biofouling protection without the drag penalty of a conventional soft antifouling. The fluoro-microadditive formula cures to a hard, smooth, low-friction surface that can be burnished or polished to a very fine profile — the same technology as the gallon size, in a quart for smaller hull areas, touch-ups, or accent work.

This listing is for the black, 1-quart (V118QTCA) formulation. VC® Offshore is suitable for both fresh and salt water applications.

Application note: VC® Offshore is a hard antifouling system. Confirm compatibility with your existing hull coating before applying. Applying hard antifouling over ablative or soft antifouling without full removal first can cause adhesion failure. Refer to the Interlux technical data sheet for your substrate and coating history.

Compatible Applications

  • Performance sail boats — racing and performance cruising hulls where a polishable, low-drag antifouling finish is required
  • Performance power boats — hard antifouling with a low-friction surface
  • Touch-up and accent work on hulls already finished with VC® Offshore in black
  • Fresh water use — effective antifouling in fresh water environments
  • Salt water use — full antifouling performance in coastal and offshore conditions
  • Not recommended over existing ablative or soft antifouling without complete removal and surface preparation first

Surface Preparation & System Notes

  • Surface must be clean, dry, and free of contamination before application

  • Bare or new fiberglass hulls should receive a compatible epoxy barrier coat primer before antifouling application
  • Can be burnished or polished after curing to achieve a lower-drag finish — follow Interlux guidelines for polishing grit and technique
  • Stir thoroughly before and during application; refer to the Interlux TDS for thinning guidance
  • Apply per the Interlux technical data sheet for recoat windows, coverage rates, and number of coats

Technical FAQ

Q: Is this a quart or a gallon?
This listing (V118QTCA) is the 1-quart size. The gallon size is listed separately as the Interlux V1181CA VC® Offshore Black, 1 Gallon.

Q: What makes VC® Offshore different from standard antifouling paints?
VC® Offshore uses a fluoro-microadditive that gives the cured film a harder, smoother, lower-friction surface than conventional antifouling paints. The surface can be polished after application to further reduce drag — making it a preferred choice for racing and performance applications where hull speed matters.

Q: Can I apply this over my existing bottom paint?
Only if your existing coating is a compatible hard antifouling system. Hard antifouling over soft or ablative antifouling will not bond reliably. If you’re unsure of your coating history, consult the Interlux compatibility guide or contact Interlux technical support before applying.

Q: How many coats are required?
Interlux typically recommends two coats for a fresh application. Coverage per coat depends on hull size and application method — refer to the Interlux TDS for the V118QTCA for specific coverage rates. A quart is well-suited for touch-up work or smaller hull sections.

Q: Can this be polished or burnished?
Yes — burnishing and polishing are key features of the VC® Offshore system. Follow Interlux’s published polishing recommendations for sanding grit progression and technique after full cure.

Parts Desk Insights

The quart size is the right call for touch-up work on a hull already finished in VC® Offshore black, or for smaller boats where a full gallon would be more than needed for two coats. The best use case is a performance or racing boat that’s already running a hard antifouling system and needs a quart to refresh worn areas or complete a topcoat without opening a full gallon. The most common issue is customers applying hard antifouling over an existing soft or ablative bottom paint — this will not work; the existing paint needs to come off first. The second most common question is whether this is a quart or a gallon — the “QT” in V118QTCA is the quart designation, and the gallon is the V1181CA. Both are the same VC® Offshore black formulation, just in different volumes.
