What This Seal Does
The 3863090 is the OEM propeller shaft oil seal fitted at the bearing-carrier / propeller shaft interface in Volvo Penta SX and DPS lower gearcases. It retains gearcase lubricant and limits water entry around the propeller shaft. A failed seal allows gear oil to escape and, over time, permits water intrusion into the lower unit — which can contaminate bearings and gears if not addressed promptly.
Compatible Applications
- Volvo Penta SX-A
- Volvo Penta SX-C
- Volvo Penta SX-M / SX-M1
- Volvo Penta SX-R
- Volvo Penta SX-S
- Volvo Penta DPS-A
- Volvo Penta DPS-A OXi
- Volvo Penta DPS-B
- Volvo Penta DPS-B OX / DPS-B1
- Related SX-family lower gearcases (OMC Cobra / Volvo SX cross-application)
This seal is drive-specific, not engine-displacement-specific. Match by sterndrive model and drive serial number. Volvo Penta lower-unit configurations vary across SX and DPS families, so drive identification is the safest reference.
Serial Number Fitment Notice
Confirm the exact sterndrive model, drive serial number, and propeller shaft bearing-carrier configuration before ordering. Where earlier seals 3858303 or 3853474 are shown, 3863090 is the current replacement — but verify via the serial-number parts diagram for your specific drive.
When to Replace
- Gear oil is leaking around the propeller shaft
- Gearcase lubricant appears milky or water-contaminated
- Fishing line has wrapped around the shaft and damaged the seal lip
- Seal is hardened, torn, or visibly deteriorated
- Bearing carrier is removed for any service
- Pressure or vacuum test indicates leakage at the propeller-shaft sealing area
Installation Notes
Drain the gearcase lubricant and remove the propeller and bearing-carrier assembly per the Volvo Penta service procedure for your drive. While apart, inspect:
- Propeller shaft sealing surface for scoring or corrosion
- Bearing carrier bore condition
- Adjacent O-ring and related seals
- Gear oil condition for signs of contamination
Press the new seal squarely into position without contacting or deforming the sealing lip. After reassembly, perform a gearcase pressure and vacuum test before refilling with gear oil and returning the drive to service.

Technical FAQ
Q: Does 3863090 replace 3858303 and 3853474?
A: Yes — 3863090 is the current active Volvo Penta number that supersedes 3858303, which in turn replaced 3853474. Order as 3863090.
Q: Is this seal used on all SX and DPS drives?
A: It covers a wide range of SX and DPS lower-unit configurations, but not necessarily every variant. Confirm with your drive serial number.
Q: Should I pressure-test the gearcase after replacing this seal?
A: Yes. A pressure and vacuum test after reassembly confirms the seal and all adjacent sealing points are sound before the drive returns to service.

Parts Desk Insights
This is the seal that gets damaged most often by fishing line — if gear oil is leaking at the prop shaft, check for line wrapped around the shaft before assuming the seal simply wore out. If line has been there long enough, it can also score the shaft surface itself, which means a new seal may not hold unless the shaft is inspected and the sealing surface is in good condition. Also worth noting: milky gear oil means water has already been in the case, so inspect the bearings and gears before buttoning everything back up.
