Needle bearings are one of the lowest-cost items in a Velvet Drive rebuild and one of the easiest to overlook — but a worn or pitted needle bearing left in place during a rebuild is a common cause of premature failure after the transmission goes back in the boat. The best practice is to replace all needle bearings as a matter of course any time the transmission is apart, regardless of how they look on the surface. At this price point, it’s inexpensive insurance against pulling the transmission again. If you’re rebuilding, also check the oil pump (71C-A60) and replace the shift spool O-ring (4804H) at the same time.
