About This Cable

Mercury 8M0082547 is a genuine OEM Platinum Plus throttle and shift cable for Mercury Generation II (Gen II) mechanical remote control systems. At 24 feet (7.3 m), it is designed for boats with longer helm-to-engine routing runs. The Platinum Plus construction features a pre-lubricated inner liner for low-friction operation, a stainless-steel cable core for strength and flexibility, and a UV- and abrasion-resistant outer jacket for long service life in the marine environment. This cable supersedes the earlier part numbers 897978A24 and 883720A24.

Gen II cables use a different end fitting design than Gen I cables and are specific to Mercury 4000-series and later control stations β€” they are not interchangeable with Gen I or DTS systems.

Compatible Applications

Designed for Mercury Gen II mechanical remote control systems (4000-series and later) only. Cable length and generation must both match the installed control system. Always confirm fitment using your engine model, serial number, and the Mercury parts diagram before ordering.

  • Mercury 25–300 HP outboards with Gen II mechanical controls
  • Mercury FourStroke outboards with Gen II mechanical controls
  • Mercury Pro XS outboards with Gen II mechanical controls
  • Mercury Verado outboards with Gen II mechanical controls (non-DTS)
  • MerCruiser 3.0L sterndrive with Gen II controls
  • MerCruiser 4.3L V6 sterndrive with Gen II controls
  • MerCruiser 5.0L V8 sterndrive with Gen II controls
  • MerCruiser 5.7L V8 sterndrive with Gen II controls
  • MerCruiser 6.2L V8 sterndrive with Gen II controls
  • MerCruiser 7.4L V8 sterndrive with Gen II controls
  • MerCruiser 8.2L V8 sterndrive with Gen II controls

This cable is not compatible with Gen I control systems or DTS (Digital Throttle & Shift) electronic systems. Gen II controls are typically 4000-series systems used in 2003 and later installations.

Serial Number & Fitment Notice

Control cable fitment depends on cable generation, cable length, and the specific control station and engine combination installed on the boat. A 24 ft cable is correct only where the routing distance from the helm to the engine matches that length β€” measured along the actual cable path, not a straight-line distance. Always confirm 8M0082547 against your engine model, serial number, control station model, and the Mercury parts diagram before ordering.

Dimensions

Supersession & Part Number Reference

  • Current Part Number: 8M0082547
  • Supersedes: 897978A24, 883720A24

When to Replace

Replace the throttle/shift cable when the control system shows any of the following:

  • Stiff, sticky, or inconsistent throttle or shift action
  • Delayed or imprecise gear engagement
  • Visible cable kinking, fraying, or corrosion
  • Cable end fittings that are worn, cracked, or no longer seat properly
  • Any failure to return smoothly to neutral or idle position

Installation Notes

Route the replacement cable with smooth, gradual bends β€” avoid sharp bends or kinks that will cause stiff operation or premature wear. Confirm both ends seat fully and lock into the Gen II control station and engine throttle/shift lever before returning to service. Lubricate the cable ends per the Mercury service manual. After installation, test throttle and shift operation through the full range of motion at the dock before operating the vessel.

Parts Desk Insights

Best Use Case: The 24 ft length is well suited for larger centre-console boats, express cruisers, and twin-engine installations where the helm is positioned well forward and the cable must be routed through a longer path through the gunwale or console. This is the correct Platinum Plus Gen II cable for those installations. The Platinum Plus construction delivers noticeably smoother operation than basic replacement cables and holds up better over multiple seasons in the marine environment. Customers doing a full control service should also inspect the shift and throttle lever pivots, cable end fittings, and control station internals at the same time.

Common Issues: The most frequent problem is confusing Gen I and Gen II cables. The end fittings are different between generations and the cables will not connect across systems. Always identify the control station generation before ordering β€” Gen II systems are typically 4000-series controls used in 2003 and later installations, but repowered or retrofitted boats may not follow that pattern. The second common issue is ordering the wrong cable length. Measure the routing distance along the actual cable path from the helm to the engine, not a straight-line distance β€” routing through the gunwale, console, or around obstacles adds significant length. Too short and the cable won’t reach; too long and the excess creates bends that cause stiff or inconsistent operation.
