Compatible Applications
Mercury Premium Plus is formulated for mid- to high-horsepower 2-stroke outboards that require TC-W3 oil and benefit from a synthetic blend formula under harder operating conditions. Always confirm the correct oil specification in your engine owner’s manual before use.
- Mid- to high-horsepower Mercury 2-stroke outboards (oil-injected)
- High-horsepower Mariner 2-stroke outboards (oil-injected)
- EFI (electronic fuel injection) 2-stroke outboards where TC-W3 is specified
- Carbureted 2-stroke outboards where a synthetic blend upgrade is preferred
- Premix applications at the fuel/oil ratio specified by the engine manufacturer
- Applications where the owner’s manual calls for Mercury Premium Plus or TC-W3 synthetic blend oil
Not for use in: engines specifically requiring Mercury OptiMax / DFI oil, full-synthetic PWC oil, 4-stroke crankcase oil, or gear lubricant. If your engine is an OptiMax or direct-injection model, check the owner’s manual — those engines typically require a dedicated DFI formula.
Premium Plus vs. Premium TC-W3
Mercury offers two TC-W3 2-stroke oils in its lineup:
- Premium TC-W3 — conventional formula suited to lower-horsepower and everyday carbureted 2-stroke applications. See: Mercury Premium TC-W3 2-Stroke Oil 1 Litre 858021KC1
- Premium Plus TC-W3 (this product) — synthetic blend formula with stronger wear and corrosion protection, intended for mid- to high-horsepower and harder-working 2-stroke outboards
If you’re unsure which grade your engine specifies, check the oil recommendation in your owner’s manual or contact us with your engine model and serial number.
When to Use This Oil
- Refilling a compatible engine-mounted or remote 2-stroke oil reservoir
- Preparing a gasoline/oil premix at the manufacturer-specified ratio
- Seasonal recommissioning of a compatible mid- to high-HP 2-stroke outboard
- Upgrading from a conventional TC-W3 oil on a harder-working or higher-output engine
Application Notes
For oil-injected engines: Fill the correct oil reservoir only. Keep the filler area clean to prevent contamination. Do not mix oil types in the reservoir unless the service manual specifically permits it.
For premix engines:
- Use fresh gasoline of the specified octane grade
- Measure oil accurately using a dedicated measuring bottle — never estimate the ratio
- Follow the exact fuel-to-oil ratio specified by the engine manufacturer
- Mix thoroughly before filling the tank
An Accu-Mix 2-Stroke Oil-to-Gas Measuring Bottle makes it easy to measure premix ratios precisely.

Parts Desk Insights
Premium Plus is the step up from standard Mercury TC-W3 — the synthetic blend gives better wear protection and cleaner combustion under load, which matters most on higher-horsepower and harder-working outboards. It’s the oil we’d recommend if you’re running a larger 2-stroke Mercury at full throttle regularly, or if you want a little more protection buffer in an oil-injected system. The main thing to confirm before buying is whether your engine calls for TC-W3 at all — OptiMax and other direct-injection engines use a different, dedicated formula, and running TC-W3 in those engines over time can contribute to carbon deposit issues.
