Mercury MerCruiser Quicksilver 26-12224 / 12224 is a genuine Mercury Marine outside propeller-shaft bearing carrier seal with a fish-line cutting feature. It installs at the outside seal position of applicable Mercury and MerCruiser gear housings, where it helps retain gear lubricant while protecting the propeller-shaft sealing area from fishing line that can wrap around the shaft. Mercury gearcase references identify 12224 as the outside β€œSeal, Fish Line Cutting” in the bearing-carrier assembly.

  • Mercury part number 26-12224 / 12224

Application Compatibility

Confirmed applications include select Mercury / MerCruiser gear housings such as:

  • MerCruiser Alpha One Gen II
  • MerCruiser Alpha One SS
  • Selected earlier MerCruiser propeller-shaft gear housings
  • Selected Mercury 75 / 90 / 115 FourStroke 2.1L gearcases
  • Selected Mercury SeaPro
  • Selected Mercury Pro XS applications

For Alpha One Gen II standard-rotation gear housings, 12224 appears as the outside fish-line cutting seal in the propeller-shaft assembly. Mercury technical information also identifies 26-12224 as a common fish-line cutter seal shared with certain earlier MerCruiser propeller-shaft applications.

Fitment Notice

Verify 26-12224 against the exact drive or outboard serial number and gearcase diagram before ordering. Several seals are installed together around the bearing carrier, and they perform different jobs.

In applicable assemblies:

Do not assume these seals interchange simply because they occupy adjacent positions in similar gear housings.

When This Part Needs Replacement

Replace the seal if there is gear-lube leakage around the propeller shaft, water contamination inside the gearcase, visible damage to the sealing lip, deterioration of the cutter section, or fishing-line damage around the shaft.

A milky or emulsified gear lubricant condition is a strong reason to inspect the complete propeller-shaft sealing arrangement, including both the inner and outer bearing-carrier seals.

Installation Notes

Remove all fishing line and debris from the propeller shaft before installing the new seal. Inspect the shaft where the sealing lips ride for grooves, corrosion, scoring, or other damage that could cause a new seal to leak.

When the bearing carrier is already apart, inspect:

  • Inside oil seal 14077
  • Outside fish-line cutting seal 12224
  • Bearing-carrier O-rings and sealing surfaces
  • Propeller-shaft surface
  • Keyed washer and bearing-carrier retainer

Install the seal in the orientation and depth specified by the applicable Mercury service manual and pressure-test the gearcase after service when required.

Alternate / Superseded Part Numbers

  • 12224 – Mercury Marine part number
  • 26-12224 – Mercury / Quicksilver formatted part number
  • Sierra 18-2076 – Aftermarket cross-reference

Parts Desk Insights

Fishing line wrapped behind the propeller is one of the easiest ways to damage a prop-shaft seal without noticing it immediately. 26-12224 is the outside fish-line cutting seal, so whenever the propeller is removed, it is worth checking this area for tightly wound line before it reaches the sealing surface. When servicing this seal, always inspect the inside oil seal 26-14077 at the same time β€” both seals are accessible with the bearing carrier apart and replacing both together avoids a repeat disassembly.
