The Sierra 3043 (18-3043) Impeller is a replacement lower-unit water pump impeller for compatible Johnson and Evinrude V4 and V6 outboard engines. Its six flexible blades rotate inside the pump housing to draw cooling water through the gearcase and circulate it through the engine. Replaces OMC numbers 385528, 389642, and 777212.

This is a large early V4/V6 impeller (approx. 3-1/2 in. diameter) covering a specific 1973–1978 horsepower range. Matching by horsepower alone is unreliable — Johnson and Evinrude used different gearcase and water pump configurations within the same HP ratings during this era. The safest approach is to confirm one of the original OMC numbers (385528, 389642, or 777212) from the engine parts diagram before removing the lower unit.
Replace every 2–3 seasons or 200 hours regardless of visible wear. Impeller vanes harden and lose flexibility before showing obvious damage, reducing cooling flow without warning.
This impeller is compatible with Sierra water pump kits 18-3384, 18-3393, and 18-3403 for a complete pump service.

Installation Notes
Lower-unit removal is required to access the water pump. During service: inspect the pump housing, liner, wear plate, key, and seals; remove any broken impeller fragments from cooling passages; lubricate the new impeller with clean soapy water or approved assembly lubricant; rotate the driveshaft in its normal direction while seating the housing over the blades. Confirm strong cooling-water telltale flow before operating under load. Never operate the outboard without an adequate cooling-water supply.
