Product Description
The Sierra 18-3584-1 is a complete marine engine circulating-water pump for Ford small-block V8 engines. It fits compatible Ford 289, 302 and 351 CID marine applications, including 5.0L and 5.8L engines used by MerCruiser, OMC, Pleasurecraft, Volvo Penta and other marine-engine manufacturers. This is the engine-mounted circulation pump that moves coolant through the block and cylinder heads; it is not the flexible-impeller raw-water pump.

Serial Number Fitment Notice
Do not select this pump solely because the engine is described as a Ford 302 or 351. Ford-based marine engines can use different front covers, pulley arrangements, hose connections and accessory-drive configurations.
Confirm the original pump number, engine model and mounting arrangement against one of the supported cross references before ordering. This pump is bi-directional and can support conventional- or reverse-rotation engines, but the physical pump configuration must still match the installation.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the circulating pump when:
- Coolant leaks from the shaft seal or housing
- The pump bearing becomes noisy or rough
- The pulley develops wobble or excessive movement
- The engine overheats despite proper coolant level and raw-water flow
- Coolant circulation becomes weak or inconsistent
- The housing or backing plate is badly corroded
- The shaft binds or becomes difficult to rotate
- Belt alignment cannot be maintained because of bearing wear
A leaking seal or loose pump shaft generally indicates that the complete circulating-pump assembly should be replaced.
Installation Notes
- Allow the engine to cool completely before service.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Drain the closed-cooling system below the pump level.
- Record the original belt routing and pulley position.
- Confirm that the new pump matches the original hose outlets and mounting pattern.
- Clean the engine mounting surface thoroughly.
- Install the supplied mounting gasket.
- Tighten the mounting bolts evenly to the engine manufacturer's specification.
- Verify pulley alignment before setting belt tension.
- Inspect the drive belt, thermostat, hoses and clamps during service.
- Refill the system with the specified marine coolant mixture.
- Bleed trapped air according to the engine service procedure.
- Check for leaks and stable operating temperature after installation.

Parts Desk Insight
This is the engine circulating pump, not the belt-driven or crank-driven raw-water impeller pump. The strongest identification method is to match the original pump number—especially 71683A1, 3853796 or RA057004—and confirm the Ford small-block mounting and pulley arrangement.
