Fitment Note: Suzuki and Johnson/Evinrude use several similar oil filter configurations across their 4-stroke outboard lineups. Always confirm by engine model, model year, and serial number before ordering. Matching one of the OEM cross-reference numbers below is the most reliable fitment method. Note that Sierra 18-7896 and Sierra 18-7897 are closely related but serve different engine serial ranges — confirm your specific application carefully.
Service Interval
Replace at every scheduled engine oil service. Follow the outboard manufacturer’s recommended interval for your specific engine — typically every 100 hours or once per season, whichever comes first.
Installation Notes
- Remove the old filter and confirm the old gasket has come away with it — a retained gasket will cause an oil leak
- Clean the filter mounting surface
- Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil before threading it on
- Tighten by hand plus ¾ turn, or per engine manufacturer specification — do not over-tighten
- Run the engine and inspect for leaks before returning to service

Parts Desk Insights
Best Use Case: Routine oil and filter changes on Suzuki DF70A through DF115 4-stroke outboards and selected Johnson/Evinrude 4-stroke applications. The Suzuki DF-series engines covered by this filter are widely used on fishing boats and runabouts, making this a frequently serviced filter for shops carrying Suzuki parts.
Common Issues: The most important distinction to communicate to customers is the difference between Sierra 18-7896 and 18-7897 — both cover Suzuki DF and J&E 4-stroke outboards, but they serve different engine serial number ranges. The safest fitment confirmation is Suzuki 16510-61A20 / 16510-61A20-MHL or Johnson/Evinrude 5033539 / 778886 for this filter. If a customer is unsure which of the two they need, ask for their engine’s model year and serial number. As always, remind customers to confirm the old gasket comes off with the old filter to avoid oil leaks after service.
