The Xantrex Freedom SW 3012 is a heavy-duty 12-volt inverter/charger combining 3,000 watts of continuous true sine wave AC output with a powerful 150-amp battery charger. Designed for demanding marine, RV, commercial-truck and specialty-vehicle electrical systems, it supplies clean 120-volt AC power from the battery bank and automatically recharges the batteries when shore power or generator power becomes available.

Key Features

  • Produces 3,000 watts of continuous true sine wave AC power at temperatures up to 40°C
  • Delivers up to 6,000 watts of surge power for five seconds
  • Integrated 150-amp charger for nominal 12-volt battery banks
  • Generator Support Mode supplements generator power during temporary high-demand loads
  • Split-phase AC input with dual AC outputs
  • Two 30-amp transfer-relay legs
  • Transfers between external AC and inverter power in less than 20 milliseconds
  • Xanbus-enabled for system configuration, monitoring and accessory integration
  • Supports compatible series-stacked installations requiring additional inverter capacity
  • Includes a remote battery-temperature sensor for temperature-compensated charging

Application Compatibility

The Freedom SW 3012 is designed for high-demand 12-volt electrical systems, including:

  • Recreational and commercial marine vessels
  • Motor yachts and larger cruising boats
  • Recreational vehicles and motorhomes
  • Heavy-duty trucks
  • Mobile service and work vehicles
  • Specialty and emergency vehicles
  • Off-grid systems using 12-volt battery banks

Its five-second 200% surge capacity makes it suitable for compatible refrigerators, pumps, air-conditioning equipment and other motor-driven loads that require substantially more power during startup than during normal operation.

Certification and Marine Installation Notice

The Freedom SW 3012 is ETL listed to CSA 107.1, UL 458 and the UL 458 Marine Supplement. Xantrex specifies drip shield part number 808-9004 when UL 458 Marine Supplement compliance is required.

The unit is identified for marine installations following applicable ABYC E-11, A-31 and A-32 requirements. It also complies with FCC Part 15 Subpart B Class B and Canadian ICES-3 Class B electromagnetic-compatibility requirements.

Fitment Notice

The Freedom SW 3012 is designed exclusively for a nominal 12-volt battery bank and must not be connected to a 24-volt system. Confirm battery-bank voltage, available battery capacity, shore-power arrangement, generator output, AC panel configuration and expected startup loads before ordering.

A 3,000-watt inverter can draw well over 250 amps from a 12-volt battery bank under heavy load. The DC conductors, battery fuse, disconnect, battery bank and connection hardware must be selected for the inverter’s actual DC current requirement and installation length.

When This Product Needs Replacement

Inspect or replace the inverter/charger if it repeatedly shuts down under loads it previously supported, fails to transfer correctly between shore or generator power and inverter operation, no longer follows its programmed charging profile or develops recurring overload, low-voltage, over-temperature or Xanbus communication faults.

Before replacing the unit, test the battery bank, DC cable voltage drop, terminal connections, incoming AC source and external circuit protection. Weak batteries, loose terminals and undersized conductors can produce symptoms similar to inverter or charger failure.

Installation Notes

Install the Freedom SW 3012 in a dry, ventilated location protected from water, excessive heat, battery gases and fuel vapours. Use properly sized marine-grade DC conductors, correctly rated battery protection and an accessible DC disconnect.

Secure the approximately 60-pound unit to a structure capable of supporting its weight under vessel movement and vibration. Follow the Xantrex installation guide for mounting orientation, ventilation clearances, chassis grounding, AC wiring and circuit protection.

Install the included remote battery-temperature sensor at the battery bank for accurate temperature-compensated charging. Use drip shield 808-9004 where required for marine certification.

Parts Desk Insight

The Freedom SW 3012 is intended for large 12-volt systems that require substantial AC output, strong motor-starting capacity and rapid battery charging. It should not be confused with the Freedom SW 3024 (815-3024): both produce 3,000 watts, but the 3012 operates from a 12-volt bank and provides a 150-amp charger, while the 3024 requires a 24-volt bank and provides a 75-amp charger. The Xanbus System Control Panel (809-0921) is required to access advanced configuration including custom lithium battery profiles.
