Permanent Thru-Hull Depth Sensing β€” Chesapeake SS Black

The Faria Chesapeake SS Black FAR 13795 is a complete in-dash digital depth sounder with a thru-hull transducer β€” the preferred installation for cruisers, sailboats, and larger powerboats where a permanent, flush-mounted transducer delivers the cleanest hull profile and the most reliable signal quality at all speeds. It ships with the thru-hull transducer, 20 feet of cable, and all mounting hardware.

The Chesapeake SS Black series pairs a stainless steel bezel with a black face β€” a sharp, nautical look that suits both traditional and contemporary helm stations.

Key Features

  • Thru-Hull Transducer Included β€” Flush-mounted through the hull below the waterline for maximum signal quality and a clean exterior hull profile; includes 20 ft of cable and all mounting hardware
  • 199 ft Depth Range β€” Covers the full range of coastal, lake, and river recreational boating applications
  • Oversized Backlit Display β€” Large, easy-to-read digits with backlighting for clear visibility in all conditions including direct sunlight and low-light night operation
  • Deep and Shallow Water Alarms β€” Audible and visual alerts for both ends of the depth range; programmable to your preferred thresholds
  • Programmable Keel Offset β€” Adjust the depth reading at the display to reflect true depth below the keel rather than below the transducer
  • Automatic Gain Control β€” Automatically adjusts signal sensitivity for consistent depth readings across varying bottom types and water conditions
  • Selectable Imperial or Metric Readout β€” Switch between feet and meters to suit your preference
  • Standard 2-1/16" Gauge Hole β€” Drops into any standard instrument panel cutout; no custom fabrication required
  • Chesapeake SS Black Styling β€” Stainless steel bezel with black face; matches the full Faria Chesapeake SS Black 2" gauge family for a cohesive helm appearance

Best Use Case

The FAR 13795 is the right choice for cruiser, sailboat, and larger powerboat owners who want a permanent, high-performance depth sounder installation and are comfortable with below-waterline hull work. The thru-hull transducer delivers the cleanest possible signal β€” no turbulence interference from the transom or hull bottom β€” and produces the most accurate depth readings at all speeds, including at anchor in deep water.

It’s the natural choice for boats that are kept in the water year-round or on a mooring, where a permanent installation is more practical than a transom-mount that requires seasonal removal. It’s also the preferred option for sailboats and displacement-hull cruisers where hull shape makes transom-mount placement difficult or unreliable.

For a matched Chesapeake SS Black instrument panel, pair it with other gauges from the Faria Chesapeake SS Black Fuel Level Gauge, Oil Pressure Gauge, Water Temperature Gauge, or Voltmeter.

Prefer a simpler installation without hull penetration? See the Faria Chesapeake SS Black Depth Sounder – Transom Mount (FAR 13750) or the In-Hull version (FAR 13751). For the Chesapeake White SS style, see the FAR 13850 Transom Mount or FAR 13851 In-Hull.

Parts Desk Insights

Best for: Cruiser, sailboat, and larger powerboat owners doing a permanent installation who want the best possible signal quality and a flush hull exterior. The thru-hull is the gold standard for depth transducer performance β€” but it requires drilling a hole below the waterline and fitting a proper seacock or bronze thru-hull fitting, which should be done by a qualified marine technician if you’re not experienced with below-waterline hull work.

Installation complexity: Thru-hull installation is significantly more involved than transom or in-hull mounting. You’ll need to haul the boat, drill through the hull, install a thru-hull fitting with appropriate backing plate, and bed everything properly with marine sealant. Plan for a boatyard visit if this is your first thru-hull installation.

Fairing block: On most hulls, a fairing block is required to angle the transducer face perpendicular to the waterline. Confirm whether your hull shape requires one before ordering β€” fairing blocks are typically sold separately and are hull-angle specific.

Keel offset setup: After installation, program the keel offset to reflect the distance from the transducer face to the bottom of the keel. This is especially important on sailboats with deep keels where the transducer may be mounted well above the keel’s lowest point.

Weight note: The recorded weight of 75 g appears to be a data entry error β€” the actual kit weight including thru-hull transducer, cable, and hardware is likely in the 900–1,200 g range. Verify and update before publishing if accurate shipping weight is needed.
