Johnson Pump 09-1027B-10 Impeller | Volvo Penta F5B-9 Raw Water Pump

Part Numbers: 09-1027B-10  /  189-091027B10

The Johnson Pump 09-1027B-10 is a 12-blade flexible raw-water pump impeller manufactured from Johnson’s MC97 compound, designed for selected Volvo Penta gasoline-engine raw-water cooling pumps. It is the correct service impeller for the Johnson Pump F5B-9 cooling pump used as the OEM replacement for Volvo Penta 21214596 and related F5B-9 Volvo Penta pump configurations including 21214599.

Impeller Specifications

  • Pump family: Johnson Pump F5B-9
  • Material: MC97 rubber compound
  • Number of blades: 12
  • Outside diameter: approx. 2.25 in. / 57.2 mm

Compatible Applications

Documented for Johnson Pump F5B-9 cooling pumps used on selected Volvo Penta gasoline engines:

  • 4.3GL
  • 4.3GS
  • 4.3Gi
  • 5.0GL  /  5.0GLP
  • 5.0Gi  /  5.0GiP
  • 5.7GL
  • 5.7GS

Volvo Penta gasoline engines may use different raw-water pumps depending on engine model, production period, pulley configuration, and cooling-system arrangement. Always confirm the engine model and existing pump or impeller number before ordering rather than matching by engine displacement alone.

OEM & Cross-Reference Part Numbers

  • Johnson Pump: 09-1027B-10
  • Distribution SKU: 189-091027B10
  • Volvo Penta pump reference: 21214596
  • Volvo Penta pump reference: 21214599
  • Related single-kit impeller: 09-1027B-1 / 189-091027B1

Service Interval

Johnson Pump recommends replacing the raw-water impeller as preventive maintenance rather than waiting for the impeller to fail. Annual replacement at layup or spring commissioning is standard practice on most marine gasoline engines. Never run the raw-water pump dry — even a brief dry-run can cause permanent blade damage.

When to Replace the Impeller

  • Blades are cracked, hardened, permanently bent, or missing tips
  • Raw-water flow is reduced or intermittent
  • Engine is running warmer than normal
  • Impeller service history is unknown
  • Annual maintenance is due

Installation Notes

  • Remove the pump cover and extract the old impeller fully before inspecting for blade damage
  • If any blades are missing, inspect all downstream cooling hoses and passages for rubber fragments before installing the replacement — missed pieces are a common cause of continued overheating
  • Lubricate the new impeller with water-safe impeller lubricant before installation
  • Rotate the pump shaft in its normal operating direction while seating the impeller
  • Replace the pump cover gasket if worn or damaged
  • Verify normal raw-water flow immediately after startup

Parts Desk Insights

The 09-1027B-10 is the Volvo Penta application-specific impeller for the Johnson Pump F5B-9 fitted to the 4.3L, 5.0L, and 5.7L gasoline engine families. It comes up most often during spring commissioning, annual service, and post-overheat inspections on Volvo Penta-powered sterndrive and inboard vessels. The Volvo Penta OEM pump references (21214596 and 21214599) are useful for confirming the correct pump variant is installed before ordering the impeller.

The most common issue is ordering by engine displacement without confirming the actual pump fitted. Several Volvo Penta gasoline engines of similar displacement use different raw-water pump configurations with different impellers — matching the pump number or existing impeller number is always more reliable than matching the engine size alone. Also note that 09-1027B-10 is an application-specific impeller, while the closely related 09-1027B-1 is the standard single-kit F5B reference — confirm which is required for your pump configuration before ordering.
