Martyr CMX05M Magnesium Streamline Shaft Anode
The correct sacrificial shaft anode for 1-1/4" prop shafts in freshwater. Magnesium is the only alloy with sufficient electrochemical activity to protect your shaft in low-conductivity freshwater — zinc and aluminum anodes go passive in freshwater and provide little to no galvanic protection. The streamlined, hydrodynamic profile keeps drag to a minimum, and the stainless steel Allen head screw holds the anode firmly in place all season.

The CMX05M is the right anode for any 1-1/4" shaft running in freshwater. The 1-1/4" shaft is one of the most common sizes on mid-range inboard cruisers and workboats, and it’s also one of the sizes where we most frequently see zinc anodes installed on freshwater vessels. Zinc simply doesn’t work in freshwater — it passivates and stops sacrificing, leaving the shaft and cutlass bearing unprotected. If you’re seeing corrosion on a freshwater vessel with zinc shaft anodes, switching to magnesium is the fix.
For saltwater or brackish water, use the CMX05 zinc (saltwater) or an aluminum version for brackish conditions. For vessels that need more mass between haulouts in saltwater, see the CMX05A extended heavy.
