The Sea-Dog 4204871 Safety Ignition Kill Switch is a panel-mounted marine emergency cut-off designed specifically for ignition-kill wiring systems. Identified by its gray cap, this switch is wired so that the engine runs only while the lanyard clip is seated in the switch — pull the clip free and the ignition circuit opens, shutting the engine down immediately. Attach the coiled lanyard to your life jacket or wrist before getting underway so the engine stops automatically if you are separated from the helm.
Key Features
- Ignition-kill circuit — engine runs with lanyard in, stops when lanyard is removed
- Gray cap identifies this as the ignition (normally-closed) version
- Coiled lanyard: approximately 15 in coiled / 48 in extended
- Weatherproof injection-moulded housing
- 5/8 in mounting hole diameter
- Maximum panel thickness: 5/8 in
- Maximum current draw: 5 A
- Replace lanyard if worn, cut or frayed
- Test before each outing
- Weight: 36 g / 1.3 oz
Intended Use
Designed for boats and personal watercraft with ignition-kill wiring — the most common configuration on modern outboard and sterndrive engines. The gray cap makes it easy to identify at a glance and distinguish from magneto-kill versions when servicing or replacing switches at the helm.
Fitment Notice
This switch is wired for ignition-kill only and is not compatible with magneto-kill systems. Panel cutout requires a 5/8 in hole. Maximum circuit draw must not exceed 5 A. If your engine uses magneto-kill wiring, or if you are unsure which type your engine requires, the Sea-Dog Safety Kill Switch — Universal Dual-Circuit supports both wiring types. For a lanyard-only replacement that plugs directly into an outboard receptacle, see the Sea-Dog 7-Key Universal Kill Switch with Lanyard or the Sea-Dog 10-Key Universal Kill Switch with Lanyard.
Installation and Use Notes
Mount the switch at the helm within easy reach of the operator. Connect wiring according to the ignition-kill diagram supplied with the switch. Attach the lanyard to your life jacket D-ring or wrist strap before starting the engine. Inspect the lanyard before each outing and replace it at the first sign of wear, cuts or fraying.

Parts Desk Insight
This is the right switch when a customer knows their engine uses ignition-kill wiring and wants a dedicated single-circuit panel switch rather than a universal dual-circuit model. The gray cap is the quick visual identifier — if a customer describes a gray-capped switch at their helm, this is the direct replacement. For customers who are unsure of their wiring type, recommend the dual-circuit universal switch instead, as it covers both ignition-kill and magneto-kill without requiring the customer to diagnose their system first.
