Xantrex 8172000 Freedom X Power Inverter, 2000W, 12V

The Xantrex Freedom X 2000 is a compact 12-volt true sine wave inverter designed to supply clean 120-volt AC power aboard boats, recreational vehicles, commercial trucks and specialty vehicles. It produces 2,000 watts of continuous output at temperatures up to 40°C, delivers up to 4,000 watts of surge power for five seconds and includes an automatic 30-amp AC transfer relay for systems connected to shore power or another external AC source.

Certification and Marine Installation Notice

The Freedom X 2000 is ETL listed to CSA 107.1, UL 458 and the UL 458 Marine Supplement. Xantrex specifies drip shield part number 808-1050 for installations requiring compliance with the UL 458 Marine Supplement. Marine installations must also follow applicable ABYC electrical requirements for conductor sizing, grounding, circuit protection, ventilation and equipment placement.

Fitment Notice

Confirm that the vessel or vehicle uses a nominal 12-volt battery bank. This model must not be confused with the 24-volt Freedom X 2000 (817-2000-21), because the two versions are not electrically interchangeable.

At full inverter output, the 817-2000 draws approximately 192 amps from the 12-volt battery system before allowing for installation losses. Confirm that the battery bank, DC cables, fuse, disconnect and charging system can support the expected continuous and surge loads.

When This Product Needs Replacement

Inspect or replace the inverter if it repeatedly shuts down under loads it previously supported, fails to transfer correctly between external AC and inverter power, produces recurring low-voltage, overload or over-temperature faults, or shows evidence of corrosion, overheated terminals or internal electrical failure.

Test the battery bank, DC cable voltage drop, shore-power input and external circuit protection before replacing the inverter. Weak batteries, loose connections and undersized conductors can produce symptoms similar to inverter failure.

Installation Notes

Install the inverter in a dry, ventilated location protected from water, excessive heat and fuel vapours. Use appropriately sized marine-grade DC conductors, a correctly rated battery fuse and an accessible battery disconnect. Keep DC cable runs as short as practical and follow the Xantrex installation guide for mounting orientation, ventilation, grounding and AC wiring.

A 2,000-watt inverter places a substantial demand on a 12-volt battery bank. Cable sizing and overcurrent protection must be based on the inverter’s DC current requirement rather than AC output current alone.

Parts Desk Insight

The Freedom X 2000 is an inverter only. If the installation also requires battery charging, the Freedom XC 2000 (817-2080) adds an integrated 80-amp charger in the same form factor. Also verify battery-bank voltage carefully: Xantrex offers both 12- and 24-volt Freedom X 2000 models, and the 24-volt version (817-2000-21) is not interchangeable with this unit.
