WIX Oil Filter 51083 – Mercury & Mariner Four-Stroke Outboards

The WIX 51083 is a full-flow spin-on lubricating oil filter used in select Mercury and Mariner four-stroke outboards, as well as compatible automotive and industrial engine applications. Its enhanced-cellulose filtration media captures damaging contaminants while maintaining the oil flow required to protect bearings, journals, and other internal engine components.

This filter measures approximately 3.40 inches high by 2.92 inches in diameter and uses an M20 × 1.5 mounting thread. It includes an anti-drainback valve and an 8–11 psi bypass valve to help maintain lubrication during startup and when the filter media becomes restricted.

Engine Compatibility

WIX catalogue data associates the 51083 with select Mercury Marine and Mariner mid-range four-stroke outboards, including Mercury 25 hp, 30 hp, 30 EFI, 40 hp, 40 EFI, 115 EFI, and corresponding select Mariner mid-range applications. The WIX catalogue also links this filter specification with Mercury 35-8M0162830 and MerCruiser 35-877767K01. Exact application can vary by model year, engine origin, serial-number range, and installed oil filter head.

Fitment Notice

Confirm the outboard model, serial number, and number printed on the existing filter before ordering. Mercury and Mariner engines with the same advertised horsepower may use different filters depending on production year, engine family, and manufacturing source. Do not select this filter by its M20 × 1.5 thread alone — filter height, gasket diameter, bypass pressure, and anti-drainback-valve configuration must also match the engine’s lubrication system.

When to Replace

Replace the oil filter whenever the engine oil is changed or at the interval specified in the engine owner’s or service manual. Earlier replacement may be appropriate following extended trolling or low-speed operation, frequent short operating cycles, heavy-load or high-temperature use, fuel, water or debris contamination, long periods of seasonal storage, internal engine repairs, or abnormal oil-pressure conditions. Replace the filter immediately if the housing is dented, heavily corroded, or leaking.

Installation Notes

Remove the old filter and verify its sealing gasket has not remained on the mounting surface. Clean the filter head and lightly lubricate the new gasket with clean engine oil. Install by hand to the manufacturer’s tightening specification — do not overtighten. After installation: refill with the specified oil, start the engine and confirm normal oil pressure, inspect for leakage, shut down and allow oil to settle, then recheck and correct the oil level.

Parts Desk Insights

The common mistake with this filter is ordering by horsepower alone. Mercury used several different engine families across its mid-range lineup, so matching the serial number and existing filter number is the safest way to confirm the correct bypass and gasket specifications. The Mercury OEM cross-references (35-8M0162830 and 35-877767K01) are the most reliable confirmation of fitment for Mercury and Mariner applications.
